Character Name:Florian Leickenbloom
Series: The Monster of Elendhaven
Age: late 20s
From When?: Florian's death at the end of the novel, shot by a Mage Hunter

Inmate Justification: Florian has lived a horrible and horrifying life and he has become monstrous because of it. It is his life's goal to wreak revenge upon his city and really, the whole world for what was done to his family and what was done to his city. Specifically, he spent his entire life using his magic to keep his city a shell of it's former glory and to create an unstoppable, un-killable plague that he'd spread to the foreigners who came to profit off of his city's suffering. In short: he tried to end the world with a terrible, sorcerous plague because he hates it and the way it's looking? He might have succeeded. It's like Frankenstein: Johann might be the supernatural killer with the blade but the real monster is Florian.

Arrival: 100% against his will; he was content to die in giving Johann his life's work to complete and he always lived very much burning the candle at both ends, living mostly to spite people as opposed to finding any real joy in life.

Abilities/Powers: Florian is a sorcerer, with the ability to do magic in his blood; there's also some evidence that he is a 'favored' of the goddess of the seas of his world and he might have been a prophesied apocalypse? Canon unclear. Despite being small and frail, there's always a certain amount of heat around him (steaming up windows, steaming away snow at his footsteps) and a frisson in the air near him to those with supernatural senses. "The ability of humans to use magic is aberrant [...] Magic is the element the planet needs to thrive, to produce life, much like the [...] the carbon filament in a lightbulb. It is the channel of life, the conduit beteen nothing and something."

Basically, he's extremely untrained and he's figuring this all out from scraps in various books that he has to decode without the keys. In a practical sense, we've seen him do the jedi mind tricks, light candles and things, bodily control (of Johann), telekinesis/force push, and he's able to infect the flesh of a creature with a touch of his hand.

As an inmate, anything that outright affects another person (meddling with people's minds, bodily control or harm) doesn't work at all without consent. I'm doing it this way because I don't want him to have the capacity to do harm but I would like him to learn how to use his magic to do not-shitty things and a teacher would be someone he might be able to work with and potentially get to the big T with (trust, I mean trust). Anything to do with disease is entirely null and void right now. Which leaves him with some telekinesis (just enough for self-defense given his physical frailness, enough to push someone away) and what amounts to DnD Prestidigitation-type stuff.

He is also an accomplished researcher, codebreaker, alchemist, and one hell of an accountant.

Inmate Information: Most of the super important stuff is covered elsewhere so I'm going to go through the bullet points!

Serious Crimes:
-doesn't care when/if Johann kills people
-watched his sister accidentally kill someone and helped her throw the body into the sea to cover it up
-financially and industrially crippled his city for years
-developed a number of strains of arcane plague that he made unkillable via Johann to take his revenge on whole cities worth of people
-infected an entire dinner party full of dignitaries and wealthy business men with various horrible versions of a plague.

Harm They've Done:
-uses his magic to manipulate people and get free food and coffee

Major Life Events:
-the plague
-trying to save his mother when the plague was just in her leg, then mercy killing her when it Didn't Work and his mother was suffering
-his sister getting sick and dying and him having to look after her since everyone else was dead; for him, 'she was the sun and he was the moon'
-throwing his sister's body into the sea once she died in the hopes of getting a hallenkind
-getting locked inside a mansion full of corpses without food or medicine for two months
-accidentally not recognizing his hallenkind and running from him, abandoning who would later become Johann and missing out on the years he could have had a companion and friend that might have helped him NOT turn into a bitter, angry, wretched, vengeance-fuled asshole.
-meeting Johann
-deciding to actually start a relationship with Johann (the only one he's ever had)

Defining Personality Traits:
-precise and exacting; he's an accountant and it shows in how he handles things, unless he gotten to the point where he's stopped caring. But if he cares and he's interested, he's very exact.
-suicidal: he has no intention of living through his destruction and doesn't care, much to Johann's frustration
-brilliant: taught himself sorcery from scraps and experimentation while sorcery is heavily outlawed and basically a death sentence
-bitter: Florian is just a font of bitterness, angry at everyone and everything and wanting to take as much from them as he can.; he's basically alive out of spite and vinegar
-extravagant: he loves fine things, nice clothes, good food, a comfy house, his little niceties (coffee and biscuits with jam, etc) and a lot of his joy from it comes from how he gets the money (which is stealing, effectively)
-pragmatic: he saw his father's pretend charity for what it was and was honest about what his parents were and are and never had a romanticized view of his position as an aristocrat, even if he would use that status; the extravagance doesn't negate that cause it ain't his money he's spending!
-a little bit ridiculous: he startles and blusters and squeaks and just generally frips about being ridiculous and he does that even with Johann so it's not just a front
-a traditionalist: he's offended at anything 'changing' his city, offended at the idea of breaking open a mountain, loves his scary old religion and folklore and he's VERY disdainful of anything from other cultures less as a matter of thinking his is 'better' and more that he's frustrated at the idea of it taking over his city or it's culture
-cutting and sharp and sarcastic: verbally clever and often mean
-duplicitous: he's very good at hiding his real emotions behind a facade and his real feelings on someone behind a polite acquaintance.
-stone cold and stone hard: his physical frailty belies the strength he has (not physically, no, he's a stick, but he can take a lot of pain and when he's determined he'll keep working at it no matter what)
-"a curiosity in a glass jar": he's always felt contained, as if he was never able to be himself or be anything but something people look at and have opinions on; maintaining and manipulating people's feelings about him have been an important and consistent part of his life for a very long time

General Temperament:
-emotive and reactive when being himself: fussy and snippy and demanding. We've only ever seen him be himself with Johann and Johann is His.
-also extremely driven; if he has an enemy or a goal, he'll pursue what he intends even if he has to work on it for YEARS
-friendly, frippish, charming and competent when he's in public

Worldview:
-the world is a bastard so I'll be a bigger one
-eye for an eye; balance the checkbook and no mercy to speak of
-it doesn't matter if I die as long as I get them first/too/better
-he will lose anything he loves so better never to allow it in the first place
-at one point he observes "Don't you feel it sometimes? As if the world wants to consume itself?" so yeah he basically believes the world is headed to destruction
-"Johann heard it properly: Florian Leickenbloom did not think himself a creature made by mortal intent. He was like Johann, one of the Black Moon's monsters."
-does not like poetry

Reaction to Challenges:
-buckle down and FACE IT
-and use anything he needs to to rip it to shreds

Path to Redemption: Florian once wanted to be a doctor. He was a gentle, curious child... and then the plague came, his home turned on him (in so many ways), he lost his sister, and he was the only survivor left nothing but a moldering tomb of a manor and a name tainted with sickness and possible (very much frowned on) sorcery. Florian has been twisted by grief, trauma, and a desperate need to revenge himself against the world for the cruelty inflicted on him and his family and it's damaged his ability to trust, to love, or to see value in other people beyond what he can take from them. He is in a state of constant war against the entire world and he needs to put that down. He needs to grieve, needs to process his anger and his survivor's guilt, and move forward and on from his past, and he needs to make friends and see life as an opportunity to find happiness instead of just to make other's suffer. TLDR: give up his revenge plans, make friends, and find a reason to live for himself.

History: Florian was born to a very very VERY old aristocratic family in the northern part of his world; the city of Elendhaven is cold and dark and mostly full of factories that no longer produce anything because they've been deserted. Most of it's commerce comes from whaling and fishing, but by and large the whole place is in disrepair and a hive of scum and villainy would be forgetting the dark folklore, darker religion, and the ancient history of old ways and magic that haunt the whole city like a never-shifting cloud. The water is black with ash, and the superstition is cruel and not nearly as far away as those huddled near the light would like.

...think Dishonored or Blades in the Dark. That's the vibe.

That said, things weren't terrible when he was a child: his father ran a textile factory and he had his twin sister, his beloved Flora, and he was a relatively happy child even though, well, things were dark enough that his grandmother admitted to dashing a child's brains against the pavement for suspected sorcerer abilities which, you know, he had and very much kept to himself accordingly. So that's a little Gormenghasty but not terrible.

Then his father gets the plague from visiting the textile mills. His family, being old blood and having a reputation for having had sorcerers, are deemed the source of the plague and the entire city literally locks them in their own house to die. All the servants get tossed in the basement by his mother in revenge, his father slowly wastes away before they toss him down into the basement full of dead servants, he and his sister try to help their mother who gets infected and Florian ends up mercy killing her with his magic so you know... not traumatizing at all!!

And then his sister gets sick. And he's there with her until she passes, drags her body to the ocean, and doing the whole hallenkind thing that's mentioned in Johann's app to make Johann. But he doesn't realize that Johann is his hallenkind.

The two meet and then Florian goes RUNNING, leaving Johann without a purpose in a terrible cruel city that's on a decline... and Florian with no one in the same city that now hates him because guess what? His father didn't start the plague and it ravaged the city until the southern cities decided to come and help this poor starving coastal spot. But the thing is?

He hates them too. And he has nothing, other than his sorcery.

He used that to make one of the richer men in the city think that he was his godfather. Then he uses it to get himself a good education, a position in an accounting firm, and to star his work. His work, specifically, is to ensure that no money comes to the city, no foreign investors succeed in his city, and on the side, he's slowly working on a plague to make the one that killed his family look pale that he wants to infect everyone else with to make them pay: the city for locking them away and the foreigners for only coming in to help too late to do anything but pick at the bones of what was left and try to exploit the place for its resources.

He meets Johann when Johann tries to mug him on the street and he doesn't even acknowledge him as his hallenkind for most of the book. But Johann becomes his servant and bodyguard and only friend and vice versa, and Johann helps him in his work as he investigates what Johann is and the two eventually fall into a very broken, toxic relationship. Stuff Happens, and he manages to get a bunch of foreign ministers and businessmen infected with his plague. More Things Happen and it ends with Florian shot by a Mage Hunter who'd been sent to the city by those who recognized that SOMEONE was fucking with things and Florian using his last gasp to empower Johann with the means to ensure his revenge plays out.

Sample Network Entry:
I am without the lion's share of my tricks.
I am dead without the power of this place.
I am to 'redeem' myself to some great and unseen entity that decides, arbitrarily of course, when such a state has been reached.

Humiliating, all of it, but I have been humiliated before. I have simpered and groveled and bared my throat to whatever powerful men needed to see it to think I worked to their cause and toiled for their benefit and yet I hate none of those as I hate the Admiral.

Because he took what was mine, more than my flesh, more than my blood, more than the scars on my arms or the hair on my head. If there is anything more purely mine than Johann, I do not know it, for he is my wretchedness made flesh, my loss given form. Mine in every way, and yet the Admiral would take him and seek to reform him. Stop him from fulfilling my goal.

I am as helpless as I was as a child, locked in to a very different beautiful prison, the stars around it as black as Elendhaven's water, but I do not fear. I am resolved. And I will have my due recompense.
